Nine risk factors have been identified to account for more than 90% of the risk for heart attack.
These are the risk factors in descending order: 
  1. Dyslipidemia (abnormal cholesterol levels)
  2. Smoking
  3. Psychosocial stressors
  4. Diabetes mellitus
  5. Hypertension
  6. Obesity
  7. Alcohol consumption
  8. Physical inactivity, and 
  9. Diet low in fruits and vegetables.
 
All of the above risk factors could be modified by lifestyle modification, including diet, exercise, weight loss, smoking cessation, seeking social support, and alcohol abstinence.
