Heartburn Hurts - Know these Steps

Jan 06, 2020
Acid reflux (heartburn) occurs when the stomach contents back up into the esophagus and/or mouth. People with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) experience bothersome symptoms or damage to the esophagus as a result of acid reflux. Symptoms of GERD can include heartburn, regurgitation, and difficulty or pain with swallowing.

Here are important lifestyle changes for GERD patients to consider to relieve their symptoms:
  1. Losing weight (if you are overweight)
  2. Raising the head of your bed 6-8 inches, by simply putting blocks of wood under the legs or a foam wedge under the mattress or using commercial products for this purpose.
  3. Avoiding foods that trigger symptoms – Such as caffeine, chocolate, alcohol, peppermint, and fatty foods may cause bothersome acid reflux in some people.
  4. Quitting smoking.
  5. Avoiding late meals – plan your meals for at least two to three hours before bedtime.
  6. Wearing loose, comfortable clothing.
