Know the Signs of the Flu - Avicenna Health

Dec 10, 2019
Influenza (the flu) is a highly contagious illness that happens more often in the winter months when people spend more time in close contact with one another.

Symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, muscle pain, cough, and possibly sore throat. Fever in the flu is usually more prolonged (2-5 days) than the temperature with the upper respiratory infection (1-2 days).

People with the flu are encouraged to seek rest, take a large amount of fluid to avoid dehydration, treat the symptoms with over the counter medications such as acetaminophen and decongestants.

Antiviral treatment is a prescription medication that can reduce the severity and duration of symptoms by about one day. Antiviral medication is most useful for influenza when it is taken within the first 48 hours of flu symptoms. When your doctor prescribes this medication, then fill it, and use it as soon as possible to achieve the maximum benefit.
